Come diavolo ci riesci?

The tie, is the man; it is through it that man is revealed and shown. To know a man, it’s simply a glance on this part of him joining the head to the chest.

Honoré de Balzac

The art of wear the tie, an occult agreement, which for century is stipulated under the eyes of a mirror, an experiment of everyday creativity, in which the movements, highly individual, externalize the dedication that it levels out during the knotting act. It is not a simple whim, but a felt and indispensable need for the elegant man, whose main purpose is to outline his inner genius. Nothing less than a simple fabric square, diagonally cut and folded on itself, sealed at the back by a hand-embroidered joist, to join the pieces of fabric that make up the tie. Despite its extraordinary simplicity, the visual and emotional impact that is able to evoke are immeasurable, thanks to the strong personality of which is imprinted, escaping, with its uniqueness, at too equal world. The tie it can be defined as a good taste thermometer on absolute sophistication scale, an essential tool for obtaining a measured and thoughtful style. As well as the foundations were praised by Conte Della Salda in 1827 (The art of putting your tie in all fashions known etc .; Milano Pirotta 1827), those principles have remained a landmark that has evolved through historical gimmicks of this essential menswear. The symbolic value that it has acquired over time, has become an accomplice to a priceless iconographic repertoire; from rectangular handkerchiefs of the Directory, the ties of the great dandies, such as Beau Brummell and his great white silk tie, Gabriele d’Annunzio, with its mysterious Nicky Milano ties, the great Cambridge English physicists, among which includes the Baron Rutherford; to the most recent ties of Gianni Agnelli, from the typical asymmetrical knot, fluttering with the lower flap took longer than the upper one, in line with its breezy approach to wear the tie, as opposed to the established schemes in terms of length, which, however, will never exceed his belt, or be too short.

The usefulness of the tie has always been cause of discussion and controversy, despite its repeatedly announced death, with ups and downs, it dominates undisturbed in the wardrobe of every self-respecting gentleman. The rediscovery of traditional tailoring and classic style, brings today looking for new fabrics and colour games, tailoring and construction details, without, however, changing the solemnity of its essential form, which can reflect or not the presence of well certain aesthetic parameters. The stem, active side of the tie, surmounts the gambit, the narrow end, and wraps it in a timeless embrace, to compose a poetic balance by virtue of the contextualization principle, which is always worth repeating. Shape, weight, type and size of the knot, the quality of fabrics, and any internal, must be mixed in all proportions to the dress that will characterize and enhance. The knot must be done firmly and at the same time delicate, must sit at the shirt collar that will host it, without being too tight, or too soft, so that it underneath emerges blazing, arching into the folds of the inevitable dimple. If the latter should fail, the unsightly effect is guaranteed. The tie knots ranging from the simplest to the most intricate, often the fruit of artifice dictated by the impetus of the distinction, which has became a real science. Precluding from such complications, a simple Four in hand, Windsor, Half-Windsor or Pratt, are the key knots, in the vastness of those achievable, since each of them is the most resonance in terms of aesthetics and versatility. In relation to the symmetry, there are knots that express better the symmetrical nature than others. As a reference point, the Windsor knot, or Scappino, is undoubtedly the one that best expresses the character of a full and symmetrical knot, which goes well with open collars or French. It is symbol of elegance Thirties, that of the Duke of Windsor, however, took only the name, and not the ideation. On the other side, however, the classic par excellence, the Four in hand, whose name is known to be credited to the Four in Hand Club in London, loses symmetry, to the benefit, however, of a wide range of this tie, that, thanks to the narrowness of the knot, allows the use of accessories, such as pins and collars bars for the closed tips of the shirt, which will emphasize its natural propensity toward the outside.

Although the knotting work is represented and described by well-defined rules of construction and symmetry, the polymorph character occurs, however, in each node, since, being the result of more personal dexterity and experience, will always have a different shape, for as the steps to be performed are the same. It is this deviation from ideality, which makes the tie the inner elegance reflection of the wearer. For this purpose we should put emphasis also on the qualitative aspects. Undoubted quality of a handmade tie, which, as always, take the greatest care in the search for raw materials and in the same construction of the tie. Are preferable silk twill, jacquard fabrics and cashmere wool, that are unrivalled in terms of tightness and consistency. Three, or five folds ties, will be able to accommodate an internal core in cotton canvas or brushed wool, capable of imparting a greater body and resistance. The record, however, belongs to the tie, so-called Sevenfold. The fine silk, which normally constitutes it, becomes soul and body of the tie, gaining the maximum malleability and composure. The use of most fabric makes unnecessary the use of additional internal coatings. The imperative is always to not be deceived by an excessive number of folds, or the presence of too many discrepancies from the standard; a three folds brilliantly executed and worn, will undoubtedly have a better overall effect, compared to a twelve poor quality folds. Similarly, for the same type of node, a silk tie, will have a totally different performance from a tie in wool or mesh; the latter, in fact, will have a texture that fits in well with argyle patterns, Scottish, or horizontal stripes with the bottom cut straight, to wear with tweed and carded fabrics complete. In any case, the choice of colour gradation, must orient themselves on the toughness of colours such as red, crimson, burgundy, bottle green, brown and deep blue, with the foresight to match them to an ever clearer shirt. The reasons must be discreet, such as micro-dots, paisley patterns, or squared with harmonious tones. The redundancy of too pretentious tie in terms of nuance, is not synonymous of elegance. The use of Regimental ties, confined to a well defined spacing of the oblique lines and colour scheme, enjoys attention apart, which first requires reflection on the fact that they derive from past honours of the British people, who identified himself in its various shades. Thus it requires special handling precautions, more if it is worn beyond the of the English Channel Strait, where, no doubt, Prince Charles is an exemplary model of how a tie should be worn on.

In conclusion, it can be expressed, that the completeness of a tie is quantified by a spontaneous tendency towards good taste, relentless drive to achieve the maximum fusion of those intrinsic factors to his own person, and extrinsic, qualitatively speaking, underlying to the establishment of the necktie.

What matters is the end result, the feeling of graceful naturalness that the tie should express, i.e., it must have the air of having been tied in a hurry, regardless of the time that each will dedicate it.

– What prodigious tie, Frank. How the hell do you do?

– Yes, I think it is wonderful, but you see, I dedicate all my thoughts!
