Art Design: Le luci di Peppino Campanella

Peppino Campanella

George Bernard Shaw

Vetro e pietre, mare e terra.

EdG: Come vendi oggi i tuoi lavori?

You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.

George Bernard Shaw

Glass and stones, sea and land. These are the elements that revolve around the life of the architect/artist Peppino Campanella. I visited him in his workshop that has the most beautiful view of Polignano a Mare, Bari, and I got confirmation that, once entered his headquarters, you lose track of space and time and will be catapulted into a Wunderkammer which he defines as “the most luxurious open pit deposit that exists”.

Eleganza del Gusto: Peppino Campanella: Graduated in Architecture in 1988, in Florence; artistic soul and sensitivity to nature that surrounds us. What prompted you to return to Polignano a mare right after graduation?

Peppino Campanella: The sea has inspired me to go home. It may seem a ‘prepared’ answer but it’s the truth. Immediately after graduation, I was the only one in my group of friends to return to Polignano a mare and then I had the incredible luck of inheriting this great spot previously used as a crusher. My lab represents me fully and as you can see, the sea is seen from every angle. Over the years I have refused several proposals of very tempting sales (Peppino Campanella’s house is on the top plan of the structure, ed.).Peppino Campanella

EdG: Where does the move away from the ‘classical architecture’ in favor of a typically artistic life?

PC: I have always been close to the artistic universe and especially the recycling of materials. My very first lamp I made for my friend Guido (Peppino Campanella refers to the flâneur, popular person in that of Polignano, that writes poems on the walls of the country, ed.), a work in Calder’s style, very different from those that I make today. Then, this passion has taken more and more ground as long as my age mate, left me because I abandoned the architect job in favor of the artist. At this point the situation changed: from pure passion, my goal became to make ends meet through my work. I promised her and, after many years, I kept my word.

EdG: What is the concept of ‘solid water’?

PC: Almost all my works have fluid characteristics. From colors to shapes, up to at the same representations, the results always brings  with it something of ‘water’. Anyway, they are increasingly made to measure: it is the client that decides the final result. Fortunately, however, there is still someone who leaves me completely free to give vent to my creativity.

EdG: Where you sell your works today?

PC: I actively collaborate with Visionaire and have customers in almost all over the world. Then there are design studios here and there that display and sell my works. One above all: Peter Marino in the hectic New York.

EdG: What’s for you L’eleganza del gusto?

PC: It’s something that must be exercised. The approximation is rampant the eleganza del gusto should be taught to people. An elegant person would like to see the beauty everywhere, even on the street, where cleaning is scarce and we continue to throw everything to the ground; same thing for the sea. The eleganza del gusto is a mindset, a way of life.
