Bifest 2016: Paolo Sorrentino ricorda Ettore Scola

Ettore Scola

Ettore Scola – Un tributo

ettore-scola2

Goes away the last master of a generation that has made Italian cinema. Now we all are definitely longer alone.

Paolo Sorrentino on Ettore Scola’s death

During the hectic days of the Bari International Film Festival – Bif&st 2016, have been so many curiosities about the maestro Ettore Scola, pulled out of the drawer of memories. Among the various recollections, we have chosen to publish the memory of Paolo Sorrentino, Oscar-winning director with the film The Great Beauty, which a few months ago decided to comment in this way the disappearance of the last great master of Italian cinema.

“I had a beautiful friendship with Ettore. He had called for New Year to greet me. It is not a usual thing, he hit me. We saw so much, we spent many evenings together. I’ve always asked to see my films before they left, I wanted to know his opinion. And he was very loving, very tender with me, in spite of a character who was said to be grumpy. He could be tender and fatherly. He had a great, intelligent humor.”

What did it mean the Scola movies for Italy?

His filmography is wonderful throughout, full of beautiful films. C’eravamo tanto amati is an absolute masterpiece of cinema of all time, I will have seen at least forty times. Because it is a great dissertation on the melancholy and the passage of time. Played by actors who were memorable, but he did play even better than usual: Gassman, Manfredi, Satta Flores. Scola is sometimes added, for easy labelers, within the world of Italian comedy, but it was obviously a lot more. It was one of the greatest directors in the world, as it was Rosi’s left a year ago.Paolo-Sorrentino

You considered him a master.

La terrazza is a movie that I really liked, of course I watched with great attention when I had to do my stuff, this is obvious. And then Una giornata particolare, poignant. Perhaps only Dino Risi with “The Easy Life” he was up. Scola was the great connecting link between melancholy and irony, he did it better than anyone else in Italy and perhaps everywhere. Just see the character of Satta Flores in C’eravamo tanto amati. A painful comedy lived in the things that made Scola. He had skill and intelligence almost unreachable. Something we try to do with great modesty and I Virzi, but Scola was the master and is unsurpassed in questo.Metteva along a thin line of pain that ran through the human being, to dissolve it tried to load the weapon of spring ‘ irony. Without knowing which of them could win. In reality it is a battle, that between melancholy and irony, that does not get you anywhere. His films have been demonstrating the great man’s helplessness and I find it wonderful that within a film. Something very difficult to do really, and he did it better than anyone else.

He was able to steer in the opposite direction with a film like Brutti, sporchi e cattivi.

Often used inappropriately the word grotesque. In fact none of us has been able to work towards the grotesque, which is a kind of absolute complexity. The only one who was able to do was Scola with the movie. All what we have tried to grapple with the grotesque were boring. He alone has succeeded making a great movie.

Ettore Scola had always engaged in many battles for the cinema.

Lately he had called me for issues related to the improvement of copyright. He picked up the phone and asked all of us to do our part.

What is the best memory of Ettore Scola?

His great irony. Recently we had dinner together. He reasoned its age, 84 years. And he at one point said very calmly, as if it were a comment: “But I think it goes so well. That’s enough.” There were those who insisted that we need to actively make make a new film to Ettore? He said, ‘Do not even try it, I’m not going.” And then that thing on age. We all stopped talking.
