L’uomo elegante conosce bene l’importanza di avere scarpe di qualità e sa altrettanto bene quanto sia fondamentale che queste ricevano una costante dose di cure e attenzioni, tale da preservare nel migliore dei modi la bellezza del pellame di cui sono costituite, il colore e la forma che le rendono uniche in termini di estetica e comfort. Ogni giorno, instancabilmente, le scarpe accompagnano i movimenti del gentiluomo, esaltandone la personalità e massimizzando l’estetica dell’abito a cui si accompagnano, pertanto, ricompensarle con un’adeguata manutenzione è il minimo che un uomo possa fare affinché questo loro arduo compito non venga meno nel tempo.
La cura delle scarpe si identifica in un complesso di gesti rituali e prodotti quali creme lucidanti e liquidi che sono in grado di assicurare il nutrimento, l’idratazione e la protezione di cui le calzature hanno più bisogno, evitando antiestetici danni sulla superficie e screpolature dovute all’azione degli agenti atmosferici cui ogni giorno le scarpe sono assoggettate. Ma quali sono le regole per una lucidatura impeccabile delle proprie scarpe?
Riccardo Borella, esperto calzolaio che conosce bene i segreti intimi delle calzature artigianali, svela quelli che sono i passaggi essenziali per vestire di nuova luce le scarpe in pelle. La regola aurea è di lucidare le proprie calzature ogni qualvolta se ne faccia utilizzo, concedendole di tanto in tanto un lauto riposo, evitando, quindi, di indossarle per molti giorni consecutivi. Passando alla fase di lucidatura in senso stretto, munendosi di un panno di cotone, proveniente anche da una vecchia camicia, la prima cosa da farsi è una passata di lucido neutro, al fine di asportare le impurità che si depositano soprattutto in prossimità delle cuciture e pulire a fondo la superficie delle scarpe. Ad asciugatura avvenuta, le scarpe devono essere cosparse, usando sempre una pezzuola di cotone, da uno strato uniforme di crema lucidante della stessa tonalità della tomaia, che verrà strofinato su tutta la superficie delle scarpe, in modo omogeneo ed energico, sino a che questa non venga assorbita completamente e la superficie risulti piuttosto lucida. Grazie ai particolari pigmenti minerali di cui si compone la suddetta crema, la cromaticità delle scarpe si rinnova e riacquista pienezza. Per massimizzare la lustratura ed ottenere una maggiore brillantezza, dopo aver fatto asciugare completamente le calzature, si può procede con il cosiddetto cirage, una speciale tecnica di lucidatura che consente di ottenere un effetto estremamente lucido e levigato. Con l’ausilio di un ritaglio di cotone pulito, si procede con una prima passata di cera in pasta, la quale, grazie alla presenza di ingredienti pregiati, quali cera d’api e cera carnauba di pregiata qualità, è in grado di lucidare e nutrire a fondo il pellame. Successivamente si passa all’uso dell’alcool, il quale consentirà alla cera di penetrare al meglio, evitando che il lucido si stacchi dalla superficie delle calzature, prolungando, pertanto, la durata della lucidatura. Il panno di cotone, ben avvolto attorno alle dita della mano, è intinto in poche gocce di alcool e, prelevando una piccola quantità di cera, si friziona la miscela in modo vigoroso e con movimenti circolari sulla tomaia. L’operazione richiede passate successive, sino ad ottenere la lucentezza desiderata. Infine, si strofina la superficie delle scarpe con delle vecchie calze di seta, le quali, grazie al leggero attrito che queste esercitano sul pellame, consentiranno di esaltare ancor più l’effetto a specchio.
Pochi accorgimenti per delle scarpe che non temono gli effetti del tempo, anzi, divengono ogni giorno partecipi di una vita dedita all’eleganza e alla perfezione dello stile; trasformandosi da semplici calzature in qualcosa di più profondo.

But what are the rules for an impeccable polishing of your shoes?
Riccardo Borella, expert shoemaker who knows the intimate secrets of handcrafted shoes, reveals what are the essential steps for dressing leather shoes with a new light. The golden rule is to polish your shoes every time you use them, giving them a good rest from time to time, thus avoiding wearing them for many consecutive days. Turning to the polishing phase in the strict sense, with a cotton cloth, also coming from an old shirt, the first thing to do is a scatter of neutral polish, in order to remove impurities that settle especially near the seams and thoroughly clean the surface of the shoes. After drying, the shoes must be sprinkled, always using a piece of cotton, with a uniform layer of polishing cream of the same shade of the vamp, which will be rubbed across the surface of the shoes, in a homogeneous and energetic way, until this it is not completely absorbed and the surface is rather shiny.
Thanks to the particular mineral pigments that make up the aforementioned cream, the chromaticity of the shoes is renewed and regained fullness. In order to maximize the polishing and obtain a greater shine, after having completely dried the shoes, it is possible to proceed with the so-called cirage, a special polishing technique that allows to obtain an extremely glossy and smoothed effect. With the aid of a clean cotton cutout, proceed with a first pass of wax paste, which, thanks to the presence of fine ingredients such as beeswax and carnauba wax of high quality, is able to polish and thoroughly nourish the leather. Subsequently the alcohol is used, which will allow the wax to penetrate in the best way, avoiding that the polish detaches from the surface of the shoes, thus prolonging the duration of the polishing. The cotton cloth, well wrapped around the fingers of the hand, is dipped in a few drops of alcohol and, taking a small amount of wax, the mixture is rubbed vigorously and with circular movements upon the vamp. The operation requires successive passes, until the desired shine is obtained. Finally, rubs the surface of the shoes with old silk socks, which thanks to the slight friction that these exert on the leather, will enhance even more the mirror effect.
Very few attentions for a pair of shoes that do not fear the time effects, on the contrary, becomes daily participants of a life dedicated to elegance and perfection of style; turning from simple shoes into something deeper.
