Quando si parla di mode e tendenze sono tutti pronti a diventare protagonisti, ma l’arte della barberia (grooming o, più in generale, toilette) ha origini antichissime, ed in passato, quando la vita era più lenta, era considerata una vera e propria pratica che richiedeva calma e tempo.
Oggi l’uomo si prende ancora cura di sé, ma è passato (purtroppo) dal salone da barbiere al centro estetico ed è (anche) per questa ragione che oggi nasce Barber Life, la nuova rubrica de L’eleganza del gusto completamente dedicata all’arte della rasatura.
Che si tratti di barba, baffi o di capelli, Barber Life racconterà di quanto sia piacevole prendersi cura di sé tirando fuori, in questo modo, la propria personalità e vi sorprenderà dimostrandovi che questa cultura non è per niente scomparsa dall’Italia, ma semplicemente è stata nascosta, offuscata; e ormai lo sapete, a noi piace andare a rovistare tra le cose meno in vista, perché è quasi sempre lì che si cela il meglio.

Un eterno interrogativo. Barba si, barba no? fin dalla notte dei tempi, fin da quando l’uomo ne abbia memoria, la parola barba veniva associata a varie correnti di pensiero quali saggezza per i greci, virilità per i guerrieri di tutte le fazioni e in alcuni casi (Alessandro Magno ndr), punto debole sul campo di battaglia dato che qualche nemico vi si potesse aggrappare.
Lo stimatissimo Abraham Lincoln, ad esempio, era un degno sostenitore e allo stesso tempo possessore di una conformazione barbuta divenuta storicamente famosa. Curioso è l’aneddoto risalente al 1860 che si nasconde dietro la barba dell’allora aspirante presidente degli Stati Uniti e vede protagonista una bambina di nome Grace Bedell la quale, mediante scambio di lettere, era disposta ad offrire il suo voto e quello dei suoi fratelli (dopo un accurato convincimento) nel caso in cui si fosse fatto crescere la barba e fornì anche un personale giudizio secondo il quale le donne preferissero l’uomo barbuto generando cosi un ulteriore passaparola a favore dei voti. Lincoln, però, si vide bene dall’accettare subito tali consigli pensando di poter apparire sciocco e vanitoso.
Passando ai sostenitori di casa nostra quali Garibaldi e Mazzini oppure ai recenti rivoluzionari cubani Che Guevara e Fidel Castro, fondatori addirittura di un movimento che prese il nome di barbudos, per giungere letteralmente ai nostri giorni e alle recenti apparizioni del cantante britannico Sting apparso in totale stile hipster con tanto di caban doppiopetto, la questione barba, è sempre lì a prendersi la scena.
Può darsi che già in epoche remote si parlava, in totale involontarietà, di tendenza o più semplicemente di usanza o meglio ancora di normalità nel caso in cui facessimo riferimento a popolazioni nomadi e selvagge, prive praticamente di strumenti per potersi radere, seppur in maniera approssimativa.
Pensando, infine, al connubio barba/uomo, per spiegare la constante insoddisfazione dell’essere umano, vien facile pensare ad un adolescente che non vede l’ora di compiere il grande passo, una sorta di rito propiziatorio per l’ingresso nel mondo dei “grandi” ignaro del fatto che di lì a poco quella stessa barba che disprezzava sarà l’unica “ingress key”, o quasi, per il mondo in cui vivrà per il resto della sua esistenza.

Beard everywhere. But is it just a trend? I don’t think so.
The art of the barber has ancient origins, and in the past, when life was slower, was considered a real own practice that required patience and time.
Today the man still takes care of itself, but it’s gone (unfortunately) from barber shop to beauty salon and is also for this reason that today is born Barber Life, the new section of L’eleganza del gusto totally dedicated to the barber world.

An eternal question. Beard or no beard? since the dawn of time, since the man has memory, the word beard was associated with various schools of thought such wisdom to the Greeks, manliness for warriors of all factions and in some cases (Alexander the Great ed), weakness on the battlefield because some enemy could cling on it.
Abraham Lincoln, for example, was a worthy supporter and at the same time possessor of conformation bearded become historically famous. Curious is the anecdote dating from 1860 that is hidden behind the beard of the then aspiring US president and starring a little girl named Grace Bedell which, through an exchange of letters, was willing to offer his vote and that of his brothers (after a thorough conviction) in the event that he had grown a beard and was providing a personal judgment according to which women prefer the bearded man thus generating a further word of mouth in favor of the vote. Lincoln, however, doesn’t accepted such boards thinking that he could appear foolish and vain.
Thinking, finally, to the combination beard / man, to explain the constant dissatisfaction of the humans, comes easy to think of a teenager who can’t wait to take the big step, a sort of rite for entry into the world of “adults” unaware that soon the same beard who despised will be the only “ingress key”, or nearly so, for the world they will live for the rest of his life.
