Bentley Mulliner Bacalar: open air exclusivity

The 90th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show, as it is known, has been canceled. This has not prevented the brand to debut their creations, though. Bentley is among those, who brought to the “Virtual GIMS” the Bacalar, a 2-seater with exclusivity under the spotlight.

Created for the centennial

At a first glance the Bentley Mulliner Bacalar could seem just an evolution of the Continental, it has the same side proportions. But with a focused analysis it becomes clear that this is a completely different model. In 2019 the Crewe manufacturer debuted the EXP 100 GT at Pebble Beach, a luxurious and futuristic coupè to celebrate the brand’s centennial, and this Bacalar takes some details from it. Mainly the headlights, showing a single circular element with a transversal LED strip instead of the classic two pieces, and the thin LED taillights with a horizontal development.

The body of the car, result of Mulliner’s centuries-old coachbuilding experience, leaves the coupè style for a typical barchetta design, with speedster-style roof bumps instead of the back seats. Front and back bumper have aerodynamic elements and air vents that contrast, with the black, the Yellow Flame paint with a metallic finish obtained by rice husk ash with sustainable processes.

5000 years old wood surfaces

The craftsman cure of every model reaches its peak inside the Bacalar. The upholstery of the two single seats have finest quality Beluga leather sewed with semi-gloss leather and natural wool: the result is an elegant mix of dark tones and neat stitchings. Apart from the leather, steering wheel and gear selector are covered in Alcantara, but all of the fabrics mentioned above almost become “normal” when compared to the dashboard: the central surface is made out of Riverwood, a special wood made from naturally fallen trees preserved for 5000 years in peat bogs, lakes and rivers in the Fenlands of East Anglia. The finish shows a semi-matt color that shows off the veneer’s grain and colour.

The craftsmanship of these surfaces is perfectly combined with the latest Bentley technology: in the middle of the dashboard the classic Bentley Rotative Display takes place, hiding the infotainment screen or showing a third surface with three analog dials for outside temperature, compass and chronograph.

The most efficient engine

Only 12 units of the Bentley Bacalar will be produced, all of them already reserved, in the first ever carbon neutral factory for luxury cars. Here the Mulliner bodywork merges with the sporty and powerful soul which every client is used to. The car mounts the famous 6.0 W12, the most advanced 12 cylinder engine in the world, capable of developing 650 HP, 900 NM of torque, combined with a fast dual clutch, 8 speed automatic gearbox. The most comfortable and refined driving style will be guaranteed by the safety of the engine together with the air suspensions system control, to absorb the hardest bumps and allow the passengers to enjoy the trip with no disturbs, en plen air.
