Defender: l’iconico Land Rover è tornato

Testata all’estremo

Defender: the iconic Land Rover is back

Three years passed since the end of its production, now Land Rover decided to bring back to life the offroad car which more than anything else made the brand famous. To do so, they chose the 2019 IAA Frankfurt.

The Defender launch was the most expected one at this year’s Motor Show, and knowing the numbers is not difficult to understand why. From 1948 to 2016, going through various evolutions, more than 2 million units have been sold. More than a simple offroader, a car which united rich English artistocrats and adventurers from all over the world, among African safaris and British countryside hunts.

Child of its time with an eye to the past

The car was seen camouflaged in tests for months, now it’s finally time to admire it. Land Rover went big, with a climber who reached the Defender on top of the stand, to drive it down in a really steep descent among the shocked looks of audience and press.

Adventure is the leitmotiv of the car, the aesthetics make it clear. Seeing it live make it seem like a rendering, not an official production car: the front looks futuristic with a thin grille and the LED headlights, but has an old Defender piece like the antislip aluminum bars on the bonnet; from the side look, as Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern explains, emphasis has been given to the horizontality, with a prominent line running through the doors and with a square panel on the C pillar. Future and familiarity are merged in the back: the 4 LED elements of the taillights make it look like a modern city SUV, but the outside spare wheel and the side hinged boot door put it back on earth. Well, in the mud, because this is no city shopping car. The contrasting colored roof with curve edges, the wide wheel arches and the bigger offroad tires are among the main characteristics that made this car iconic.

Land Rover quality

The interior of this Defender has the classic cure for details of modern LR, from the Evoque to the Range. The first notable change inside is immediate: the old model was rude and raw, the new one looks bourgeois, child of its time, with digital display for the driver, a horizontally developed dashboard with touch screens and digital rotors, and the modern automatic gearbox lever. Bringing back tradition in the cabin is the embossed leather for the seats, excellent for slowing down the worn of it during offroad use, and the Windsor leather reserved for the Defender X variant. Wooden details are an original choice for the inside door handles and the central console.

Extreme testing

Such an offroad car deserves driving tests in the most impervious conditions. For this reason Land Rover testers drove it on the most extreme roads – and off them – of the world, from the Arctic to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The monocoque chassis and more than 1,2 million kilometers tests make the 2020 Defender the most tough Land Rover ever.

The 291mm ground clearance is perfect for offroading, the suspensions are electronically adjustable up to 195mm and the Defender is capable of wadings up to 900mm.

In order to be prepared to every situation, LR offers dozens of accessories, from the classic front protection bars to ladders and roof tents for the most tenacious adventurers.

As in the old model, the 90 and 110 number names are back: 90 and 110 like the inches wheelbases. The petrol engines at launch are a 4 cylinder P300 and a 6 cylinder P400 Mild Hybrid with a 48v battery; two diesel engines are available, D200 and D240. A Plug-In Hybrid version is to be expected. Prices for the new Land Rover Defender start from 51.400 Euros for the 90 and 57.400 for the 110.
