DT: Per me l’eleganza del gusto significa saper scegliere.
My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.

A father should be a headlight in the darkest nights. But is not always like this.
The relationship fathers and sons (males, in contrast with what runs in theaters in this period) is dealt with and heard thousands of times. Stories of authority and success, alternate with fights and tribulations that sometimes culminated into real tragedies.
What I will tell you, however, it’s the good that comes when you think in the right way and you try to put pride aside, focusing on a single, common goal: the good of each other.
Napoli and Palermo. Two stories, two italian excellences who come from the deep South Italy with the same goal to achieve: to hand down from father to son, the elegance. The real one.
Today we stop in Napoli to meet Sartoria Tofani.
In Chiaia, the tailors area, I came across a small workshop (the first big surprise, because of the international fame of the tailors Tofani) and to welcome me came right the landlord, David Tofani, flanked by his son Aristide, so, after tasting a good coffee, we took a slow conversation.

L’eleganza del gusto: In 2014 Sartoria Tofani turned 60 candles. Talk me about your story.
Davide Tofani: The founder was my father (Aristide Tofani, ed) that was formed very young and has learned “the craft” in the shop of one of the greatest masters of the Neapolitan tailoring, Vincenzo Attolini, defined by many as the founder of the same. This apprenticeship has allowed my father to study and to learn, in many years, the techniques and secrets of the creator of true Neapolitan jacket. After years to respect the wishes of others, it was the Maestro Vincenzo to advise my father to start his own business because he saw in him something good. And so it was. However, in the early years, my father used to commute between his couture and to Attolini, why not bring himself to leave the person who had trained professionally, so, from day to day.
EdG: What has changed since then and what, instead, the cornerstones of Sartoria Tofani?
DT: Sartoria Tofani has developed as a big family secret. Years and years of experience and secrets of my father were broadcast during my 10 years as an apprentice. From 12 to 22 years I have been his student and he was able to convey his techniques but above all the great love for this profession and for the life of the workshop. Later I worked with him for almost 20 years, to refine and amend with our techniques and our leaders. I could never give up my workshop and leave it, to make do my work to third parties, I’m a lover of craft work and hope to convey this love to my son, just like my father did with me.
EdG: About your son .. Only twenty years. Have to ask what drove him to approach the tailoring world ..
Aristide Tofani: I’ve always been attracted to the world tailoring, my father has been able to simply send his passion. I think ours is a wonderful profession that, if done with love and dedication, can lead to great success and personal satisfaction. In fact, right after finishing high school, I decided to devote myself completely to this wonderful work.
EdG: How to recognize a Tofani’s suit?
DT: The key feature of our clothes is that every step, even the most simple and trivial, is done by me in person, with techniques developed over 35 years of experience. Our customers love the breasts that run so smoothly without imperfections; the patch pockets or applied(tasca a toppa) the sleeve (manica a camicia) and the way in which the jacket surrounds the waist of the wearer.
EdG: Aristide, plans for the future?
AT: I’m going to devote myself completely to the study of the profession and to the life of the shop, helping my father in the management of labor and foreign customers. Certainly I continue to improve my English, which is now vital to communicate ef fi ciently and abroad in the internet world. In the end I will continue to work on my blog www.aristidetofani.it about the world of tailoring and bespoke in general, publishing photos, reviews and advice for beginners.
EdG: Davide, eventually, what is for you L’eleganza del gusto?
DT: For me L’eleganza del gusto is the know how to choose. Knowing how to choose what suits our person, our character and to the most varied situations, in order to be always the best.
Don’t miss the next stop in Palermo with the aristocratic Sartoria Crimi.
