Esiste un tempo per ogni cosa e per ogni tessuto vi è un’influenza stagionale che ne regola usi e virtù. C’è un tempo per il tweed; un tempo per il seersucker; un tempo per lino; un tempo per il Solaro. Ed è proprio su quest’ultimo, che il maturare della bella stagione appone i suoi doni di bellezza, baciati da un sole ancora troppo timido, perché si dichiarino, ad esempio, al più estivo lino.
Per l’uomo elegante, l’arrivo di quelle giornate assolate di primavera, possiede un unico significato: deporre i tessuti cardati dell’inverno e godere, di quella ristretta finestra temporale, in cui assaporare la peculiarità di questo pettinato dall’effetto cangiante, su cui, la diversa incidenza della luce solare, innesca prodigiosi mutamenti di colore. La singolarità del Solaro, tessuto tanto raro a vedersi, quanto eccezionale, deve il suo fascino proprio a quel sottile barlume di lampi dorati, diffratti dai fili rossi inseriti nella trama della stoffa; un fenomeno conosciuto come gioco di colori, il quale emerge da uno sfondo di sfumature beige e verdastre, composte secondo un’armatura tipicamente a spina di pesce. Magia o scienza? Il mistero di tal evento, deriva dall’interazione della luce con la materia del tessuto, il cui intreccio di trama e ordito è realizzato secondo diverse colorazioni e gradi di torsione, appositamente per creare le sue indistinguibili iridescenze di oro e rossastro, parimenti allo spettro solare da cui trae origine. Per tali ragioni, non può esservi Solaro che non si avvalga della doverosa presenza del sole, elemento corroborante nel definire il suo carattere di tessuto designato per completi da giorno.
La natura estremamente complessa del Solaro e della sua concezione, rende intricate le ricerche in merito alla sua nascita, la quale, rientra fermamente nel campo scientifico-militare. Quest’ultimo era volto allo sviluppo di tessuti coloniali, in grado di proteggere i soldati inglesi dall’effetto nocivo dei raggi ultravioletti, durante le memorabili conquiste del Secolo Imperiale, a cavallo tra il XIX e XX secolo. Ignaro del più ascetico significato estetico che avrebbe assunto negli anni, il Dott. Sambon, genio della medicina inglese, ideò un tessuto destinato a fallire in campo militare, ma che sarebbe divenuto un’icona nell’abbigliamento maschile, a partire dagli anni Trenta. Difatti, in quegli stessi anni, iniziò a campeggiare un’ampia propaganda pubblicitaria a favore del suddetto, unitamente alla proliferazione, lungo la rinomata via londinese, Savile Row, di boutique adibite esclusivamente alla vendita di abiti dai tessuti cosiddetti tropicali. Se in un primo momento furono soprattutto gli inglesi dell’alta società a farne sfoggio, durante i lunghi soggiorni nelle colonie d’oltremare, in seconda battuta, fu apprezzato particolarmente dai più recenti maestri di stile italiano, quali l’Avvocato Gianni Agnelli, Marcello Mastroianni e cultori dell’eleganza in generale, trovando in esso il giusto compromesso di raffinatezza sobria e disinvolta. Possedere un completo in Solaro, rivestiva, e costituisce tuttora, un posto centrale all’interno del guardaroba maschile, il quale può assimilarsi alla ricca biblioteca di un principe rinascimentale, teso ad assimilare l’intero patrimonio di conoscenza accessibile. Nella versione originale, il brevetto “Original Solaro Made in England”, attribuito alla nota casa londinese “Smith & Co. (Wollens) Ltd.”, è segno inconfondibile di prestigio, sebbene, anche note aziende italiane dell’industria tessile, offrano un ottimo prodotto in tal senso.
Da tali considerazioni, volte a inquadrare sommariamente il significato più generale del Solaro, scaturiscono tutte quelle implicazioni vestimentarie a cui esso è soggetto. Il segreto per massimizzare il suo aspetto virtuoso è tutto nella capacità di esaltarne la luminosità e l’intreccio cromatico, che lo rendono unico nel suo genere; da un lato, tipicamente quello dritto, il beige che si fonde con le screziature verde kaki e rossastre 
summenzionate; sul rovescio, la prevalenza del rosso mattone, che rende particolarmente gradevole la costruzione di una giacca con mezza fodera o del tutto sfoderata. La ristrettezza cromatica, sebbene oggidì sia stata ampliata in varianti dalla resa opinabile, comporta particolare cautela nella scelta degli abbinamenti, nonché della stessa foggia dell’abito, la quale, nelle varianti ad un petto o, secondariamente, anche doppiopetto, in cui si presenta, non dovrebbe essere mai in forma spezzata. In una visione d’insieme, il Solaro è armonioso se accostato ad una scarpa marrone, piuttosto che nera; ad una camicia in cotone Oxford, azzurro tenue o bianca, anziché dai colori aranciati; o ancora verso una cravatta dai toni del verde bosco, almandino, piropo e bordeaux. Analogamente, anche la scelta dei bottoni può fare la differenza, prediligendo quelli in corno color tabacco e marrone chiaro, o in semplice corozo dalle tinte rosso brunastro. Contrariamente a quanto l’apparenza concettuale possa suggerire, la scelta della tessitura aperta e areata della lana, rendono questa scelta di gran lunga migliore in termini di traspirabilità, in confronto ad un classico cotone, soprattutto se si considera il peso medio del tipico Solaro, un’ aggiuntiva per la quale il suo uso rimane circoscritto alla mezza stagione.
Oltre ai più noti fattori di qualità e avvenenza che determinano la desiderabilità di tale tessuto, al pari di una gemma preziosa, vi è senza dubbio un certo grado di rarità ad aumentarne il valore estetico. Un piacere per pochi intenditori, come sempre, gli unici in grado di creare le giuste mescolanze di tradizione e innovazione, le quali si insinuano nell’odierno processo di rivalutazione dei canoni classici dell’eleganza maschile. Ciò che è indubbio è il legame indissolubile di questo tessuto con il sole, il quale, alla luce di quanto è stato esposto, non è solo di carattere etimologico. Il Solaro è l’essenza della luce trasmutata in tessuto, sospeso tra racconti leggendari e scienza; padrone di un’eleganza su cui il sole non tramonta mai, proprio come soleva dirsi di quel grande Impero Britannico che ne congegnò l’aspetto.

For the elegant man, the arrival of those sunny days of spring has a single 
meaning: to lay the carded woven fabrics of winter and to enjoy, the narrow temporal window in which to taste the peculiarity of this worsted fabric with the changing effect, on which the different incidence of sunlight triggers prodigious colour changes. The singularity of Solaro, a fabric so rare to be seen as exceptional, owes its charm to that subtle glimmer of golden flashes, diffracted by the red threads inserted into the cloth fabric; A phenomenon known as a game of colours, which emerges from a background of beige and greenish nuances, made up of a typically herringbone framework. Magic or science? The mystery of this event derives from the interaction of light with the material of the fabric, whose weave and warp weave is realized in different colours and degrees of twist, specifically to create its indistinguishable iridescence of gold and reddish, as well as the solar spectrum from which it originates. Ignore of the most aesthetic significance that he would take over the years, Dr Sambon, the genius of English medicine, devised a fabric destined to fail in the military field, but that would become an icon in men’s clothing from the 1930s. Contrary to what conceptual appearance suggests, the choice of open and airy weave of wool, make this choice much better in terms of breathability, compared to a classic cotton, especially if we consider the average weight of the typical Solaro, an add-on for which its use remains limited to mid-season.
In addition to the best-known quality and attention factors that determine the desirability of this fabric, like a precious gem, there is certainly a degree of rarity that increase its aesthetic value. It is a pleasure for a few connoisseurs, as always, to be the only ones able to create the right blend of tradition and innovation, which are insert in today’s re-evaluation of the classical canons of men’s elegance. What is undoubtedly is the indissoluble bond of this fabric with the sun, which, in the light of what has been exposed, is not only of etymological character. Solaro is the essence of light transmutated in fabric, suspended between legendary tales and science; master of an elegance on which the sun never lands; just as it was said of the great British Empire that drew its appearance.
