From Capri to Venice, following the step of the waves with the lightness and softness that has been handed down for centuries in the tiny shops of the place, far away from large urban realities, where small jewels shoes are born under the tireless craftsmanship, liege to the art of the Italian hand making.Furlane Courtesy of Andrea Manfredini

On the one hand the sun and the heat of the magical island of Capri, with its millennial Faraglioni and timeless Zabattigli, the espadrilles symbol of Capri style; the other the melancholy atmosphere of the Venice lagoon, reserved and mysterious with its Furlane, traditionally in velvet and ambidextrous, which for decades populate the calli and sestieri of this mystical place, reinterpreted today even in the summer version. Two opposed realities; different styles; distant cultures, who speak of a humble language, that of the island fishermen and singing gondoliers, in which it is possible to outline a common denominator, the ancient and traditional flavour of simple and timeless craftsmanship. Their international success derives incomparable expression of naturalness and nonchalance as they know how to give. Made of very respectful way for the environment, they are born from nature, through the wise use of materials that belong to the humble world they come from. Today, what once were the shoes of the people, is a real habit of elegance for the gentleman under the sun, sported in the famous square of Capri, the Lido of Venice and around the world, thanks to the increased attention to aesthetic  details, in the choice of quality materials and rich colours in tune with the freshness of the summer season. Pastel tones, warm beige and delicate patterns to show off with tailored Bermuda shorts and blazer at the sea life, in the wake of the theme style of the thirties decanted in the illustrations of the time.

Venetian Furlane, also called, “papusse”, or Friulane, for the homonymous origin, over the decades have absorbed the typical features of the lagoon, a small cosmopolitan centre and exchange point between East and West. Worn by poets, fanciful wanderers, flâneur and travellers from around the world, the Furlane resist to spending time in the shade of the Rialto Bridge, or hidden in the alleys, in its many patterns and unique colour combinations, born from the merger of more pure Friuli craftsmanship and the typical eighteenth-century style of the Serenissima inscribed in precious satin, damask and antique textures that adorn these shoes. It is an exclusive item for a few connoisseurs and admirers, in which disused fabrics and shirts become uppers and fantastic inner liners; jute bags and old cartons overlap in the padding; bicycle tires for the sole hand-stitched, as it once was, with the traditional buttonhole stitch. Poor materials, durable and waterproof, to create a small work of art, perfect for summer days in the linen or cotton version. The craftsmanship of Furlane is certified by the solid stitching on the outsole, making it unique and dissimilar from increasingly countless imitations. Refined and never trivial elegance, that conforms perfectly to the foot that wears it, to breathe the air and capture the essence of an unusual Venice.

To the south, however, the Zabattigli perpetually emanate the unmistakable taste of Capri style, free from formal obligations and colourful, fuelled by the creativity and imagination of shoemakers and craftsmen of the island, referring to those black and white memories of a Dolce Vita Sixties, that populated its fragrant alleys and coffee from a walk and another of the beautiful  Jackie Kennedy, Roger Peyrefitte and Gianni Agnelli. Worn by the great names of Totò, Curzio Malaparte and Tommaso Marinetti, even today, they fascinate for their delicacy and fine workmanship. According to the tradition, the rope sole, rubber-free , born from a singular foliage plot similar to the reed, said “o ssempevivo”, strictly hand sewn on a raw canvas uppers, made even today in a refined versions with the use of shantung silk, pure linen and cotton to wrap the foot with the usual harmony and refinement. Authentic Zabattigli are a niche brand, an authentic pleasure of Italian craftsmanship to marry the sea thrills and his sweet poetry.

Zabattigli or Furlane, two free spirits that rising to an icon of a sober and natural beauty, a symbol of an economy of survival and dignity belonging to a distant history, today revisited in a contemporary way to be pleasantly worn, in respect of an immemorial style, It should not be profaned with the improper use of these shoes. Because the true elegance, is made yes of  aesthetic choices, but the respect and knowledge are a fixed point at the base of that ascent style that only culture can donate, overstepping the depths of time and ignorance.
