Il 2019 è un anno ricco di anniversari importanti: da brand più popolari e storici come Citroen a veri esempi di artigianalità come Morgan Motor Company, diverse case automobilistiche hanno festeggiato i loro centenari (e oltre) al GIMS 2019. Tra questi nomi eccellenti c’è anche Bentley, fondata nel 1919 da Walter Owen Bentley, che passò dalla produzione di motori aeronautici durante la Grande Guerra a moderne vetture di lusso e sportive.
La più veloce
Il padiglione Bentley al GIMS 2019 è ricco di modelli celebrativi del centenario. All’ingresso si viene accolti dalla Continental GT Number 9: la gran turismo inglese prodotta in soli 100 esemplari appare alla kermesse in colorazione Veridian Green. E’ carrozzata da Mulliner e monta il motore 6.0 W12 da 635 CV. Tra i dettagli più originali c’è sicuramente un pannello di legno originale della 4 ½ Litre del 1926, nascosto nella plancia rotativa del sistema infotainment. Proprio la 4 ½ Litre è fisicamente presente nello stand, in tutta la sua gloria e condizioni originali, con il legno del volante e la pelle dei sedili rovinati dai corpi degli eroici piloti degli anni ’20, che l’hanno guidata e portata a numerosi record: l’auto ha infatti vinto la Le Mans nel 1928 e per ben due volte, nel ’26 e nel ’29 è stata detentrice del record come auto più veloce del mondo. Praticamente un simbolo del circuito di Brooklands.
L’auto più importante e attesa di questo padiglione è però un SUV, non uno qualunque. La Bentley Bentayga Speed è il SUV più veloce del mondo. Un record detenuto per un pelo, certo, dato che l’auto ha una velocità massima di 306 KM/H contro i 305 della cugina Lamborghini Urus. Ma per gli inglesi, pur sempre un record. Il motore 12 cilindri a W da 635 CV sprigiona ben 900 NM di coppia massima, portanto il supersuv da 2 tonnellate e mezzo a 100 KM/H in soli 3,9 secondi. Non a caso l’auto riporta la denominazione Speed, da sempre prerogativa delle Bentley più performanti della gamma. All’esterno, giusto per non passare inosservati, presenta una verniciatura Orange Flame e dei cerchi da 22” con un design tutto nuovo. All’anteriore la presa d’aria e gli splitter la rendono più cattiva ma soprattutto pronta a risucchiare aria per raffreddare il W12, le minigonne laterali ne accrescono i muscoli e il grande spoiler posteriore fa risultare la linea più aerodinamica, certo, ma anche più appesantita.
Salendo a bordo non ci si può aspettare altro che il lusso a cui il brand ha abituato da sempre, con nuove rifiniture in Alcantara, pelli pregiate dell’edizione Mulliner e carbonio su tutta la plancia. Immancabile anche un altro record, di cui la Bentayga si fregia sin dalla sua nascita nel 2016: campeggia sulla plancia un cronografo Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling, l’optional più costoso del mondo, con un prezzo di € 200.000.
L’auto del fondatore
Quasi nascosta in una sala che racconta la storia del brand, è esposta la vera ammiraglia di Bentley a Ginevra: la Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner. Un’edizione speciale, limitata anch’essa a 100 esemplari, dedicata proprio a W.O. Bentley e rifinita maniacalmente da Mulliner. All’esterno nella vernice nera brilla una placca con la firma del fondatore. Dentro si viene catapultati in epoche ormai lontane, quando auto così venivano guidate dai vari Jay Gatsby d’Europa. In un mix di pelle rossa e radica c’è il dettaglio più importante di questa speciale Mulsanne: il poggiabraccio posteriore ha incastonata una teca, contenente un pezzo di albero motore della Bentley 8 Litre di proprietà di W.O. restaurata nel 2006. Per chi vuole portarsi a casa un pezzo di storia.
Bentley: from Crewe to Geneva with the fastest SUV in the world
2019 is a year full of important anniversaries: from popular brands like Citroen to real craftsmanship examples like Morgan Motor Company, many car makers celebrated their centenaries (and more) at the GIMS 2019. Among these excellent names there’s Bentley, founded in 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley, who moved from producing First World War airplane engines to modern luxury and sportscars.
The fastest
At the Bentley GIMS 2019 pavillion there are plenty of celebratory models. First of all there’s a welcoming a Continental GT Number 9: the British gran turismo, produced in just 100 pieces, appears at the Swiss kermess in a Veridian Green paint. It’s a Mulliner creation and mounts the 6.0 W12 635 HP engine. Among various original details there’s a wooden panel, hidden behind the rotative infotainment dashboard, coming straight from the 1926 Bentley 4 ½ Litre. The very 4 ½ Litre is phisically in the stand, in all its glory and original conditions, with the ruined wooden steering wheel and leather seats used by the heroic racers who brought it to many records: this car won Le Mans in 1928 and held the fastest in the world record for two times, in ’26 and ’29. A symbol of the Brooklands racetrack.
But the most important and awaited car in this pavillion is an SUV, not a common one though. The Bentley Bentayga Speed is the fastest SUV in the world. A minimum record, being its maximum speed of 306 just one KP/H faster than its cousin Lamborghini Urus. But for the British makers, still a record. The W12 635 HP engine is capable of 900 NM of torque, and brings this 2.5 tons super SUV from 0 to 100 KP/H in just 3,9 seconds. The Speed name was not chosen randomly, it’s prerogative of the best performing Bentleys of the range. Outside has a very eye-catchy Orange Flame paint, with a newly designed 22” alloy wheels. In the front the bigger splitter and air vents are ready to bring cooler air to the W12, the side skirts make this car more muscular and the big spoiler in the back makes this car more aerodynamic, of course, but also more heavily designed.
Going on board can’t be expected anything but the usual luxury from this brand, with new Alcantara finishes, precious leathers and carbon fiber all over the dashboard. Can’t miss to mention another record, proudly held by the Bentayga since its birth in 2016: on top of the dashboard there’s a Mulliner Tourbillon chronograph by Breitling, the most expensive car option in the world, with a price of €200.000.
The founder’s car
Almost hidden in a room with the full history of the brand, the true flagship by Bentley is on display in Geneva: the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner. A special edition, limited to just 100 pieces, dedicated toW.O. Bentley and manically finished by Mulliner. Outside, in the black paint shines a plate with the founder’s signature. Inside you live in a remote era, when various European Jay Gatsbies used to drive these kind of cars. In a mix of red leather and wood panels there’s the most important detail of this special Mulsanne: in the back armrest is showcased an original crankshaft, belonged to W.O. Bentley’s own 8 Litre, restored in 2006. For people who want to go home in a piece of history.
