Mr. Clark Gable

Clark Gable, 1946; grey flannel chalkstripe double-breasted suit, white button-down shirt

Hollywood. 1930.

Clark Gable wear a wide peaked lapel suit

Joan Crawford

Hollywood. 1930 is the year of the follies and the fears of the Great Depression, but also of the frac evenings and Tip Tap-dancing. Among the golden glow of the spotlight appear a couple of delicious pencil mustaches and waxed black hairs. The delicious taste of men’s elegance, the style of authentic and manly gentleman, the symbol of all desire, ardor, enthusiasm is him, Clark Gable, the MGM star and memorable style icon. After a childhood in Ohio, reached the limelight in the prodigious city, between loves and hidden scandals. He thrilled the crowds with his colossal movie and his patriotism; conquered generations with his virtuous elegance, implied by a relaxed attitude typical of American style, that Hollywood contributed to exalt. Until death Clark Gable was a tireless lover and tamer of women. In him there was a magnetic power that captivated the most known Hollywood stars, from his great love, Carole Lombard, to the alluring Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow and Ava Gardner.

Gable was the man every woman wanted and every man wanted to be.

Clark Gable issued the charm of the Thirties from every angle with his Fedora, pinkie rings, double-breasted jackets with broad shoulders and wide lapels, dotted with huge patch pockets for tobacco and faithful pipe. On board of his Duesenberg SJ Roadster enchanted with his energetic expressiveness. Indelibly his dramatic appearance, framed by a suggestive smile and winking eyebrows. Gable traced the lines of her undeniable style with a large show off of flannel and worsted wool suits. He honored the big screen and private life with an admirable vocation for well dressing, unstoppable on the heels of the change style which occurred on horseback of those turbulent years.Clark Gable's linen suit by Oxxford Clothes that he wears at the start of China Seas.

Suits and gestures were in harmony with his person, like a second skin. Among his many tailoring collaborations stands out, especially, the name of the famous tailor in Hollywood, Eddie Schmidt, mentor and creator of many of his most famous outfits, including those of famous and brash southern gentleman in plastron, Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939) and the unforgettable Norfolk jacket in soft tweed of the acclaimed It happened one night (1934). A film upon which many voices have moved about the actor contribute to have abolished undershirt with his epic shirtless. Even in films such as Mogambo (1953), he managed to leave his imprint style with safari hats and jackets. Passing by the sartorial excellence of Savile Row, to the custom department of the note ready-to-wear American company, Brooks Brothers, which are known his suits after the Great War, the style of Clark Gable based its roots on some strongholds of the time.

The jacket is the main leader of his clothing, the key to everything is the trim waist, accentuated by broad shoulders and adherents hips, helping to enhance the masculinity of his powerful chest. The natural armholes and furrowed chest by a light draping became emblematic of the new style, which was spreading inexorably. In the pocket inseparable white pocket squares, worn with that masterful fluency who resided in being of Clark Gable. The trousers waist rises than in the past decade, in connection to accurate waistcoats, behind which is hidden it. The cut is wide and characterized by important pleats and cuffs. The entire suit converges to a meeting point, accentuated by a well-closed button, where the waist of trousers, jacket and waistcoat gather. Gable embodied perfectly the gold elegance with its evening suits ornate by boutonniere and exuberant sportswear charm, accompanied with button-down oxford shirts, tweed jackets and V-neck sweaters that lit his looks .The right touch of warmth was given by his sober and well-knotted ties.

The wardrobe of Clark Gable was immersed in every moment of refinement and balance, where you can relive the taste of the atmospheres illustrated by Laurence Fellows. He was a magnificent example of adequacy style, regardless of circumstances, from gala evenings with black tie, to the walking with his beloved dogs, hunting parties and polo matches. His ease and naturalness out of the patterns made him a gentleman of exquisite elegance. His personal style is even today an invaluable source of inspiration.

I knew when this man walked on the set, and I didn’t know which door he came in, but I knew he was there. That’s how great he was. This magnetic man had more sheer animal magic than anyone in the world, and every woman knew it.
