Indiscusso Arbiter Elegantiae, il Duca di Windsor, destituito Edoardo VIII, è passato alla storia come uno degli uomini più eleganti del XX secolo. Un animo nobile e una dolce vita all’insegna dell’eleganza assoluta fecero di lui uno dei più celebri dandy d’Inghilterra, un Beau Brummell della sua epoca, con uno stile sempre congruo all’opera d’arte. Fu uno dei maggiori precursori del British Style, teso tra il tradizionalismo e lo scintillio con cui infrangeva le regole imposte dalla rigida società inglese d’elite.

Dotato di straordinarie doti sartoriali e di buon gusto, il Principe di Galles intraprese scelte stilistiche che imposero i canoni della moda maschile: dal celebre nodo di cravatta, alla giacca da smoking, ai pantaloni con la gamba più ampia dei classici a tubo, ai colletti di camicia morbidi in alternativa di quelli inamidati e polsini. Un maestro di eleganza che avrebbe influenzato il menswear del suo tempo, degli anni a venire e che ancora oggi costituisce un caposaldo di riferimento.

I suoi completi sportivi e quelli  per le occasioni più formali erano confezionati dagli abili sarti di Savile Row, celebre quartiere di Londra, dove il Duca era cliente fisso. Amava le giacche di Huntsman e Scholte, in particolar modo i doppiopetto grigi con quattro bottoni, abbinati con ampi pantaloni in stile americano e. Un abbigliamento tipico dei suoi numerosi viaggi e che presto divenne la “divisa” dei magnati del Novecento.  Perfezionò le proporzioni di tutti i suoi abiti, fissando i fianchi delle giacche più in alto per allungare la silhouette e mettendo a punto il London Cut, un taglio particolare della giacca avvitato e con spalle più ampie. Da buon cultore del fumo fece tagliare la tasca sinistra dei suoi pantaloni in modo da poter contenere il portasigarette.

A partire dagli anni Trenta, Edoardo presenziava alle cene informali con una dinner jacket “Midnight blue”, di un profondo blu nerastro, che sotto la luce artificiale regalava un riflesso luminoso “più nero del nero”. La mise era accompagnata da una camicia da smoking con colletto rovesciabile, polsini doppi con gemelli e sparato a piegholine in sostituzione della camicia rigida del frac. Trend setter abilmente impostati per migliorare il comfort e rafforzare l’eleganza dei suoi abiti formali. I revers erano a scialle, richiamando l’originaria smoking jacket di velluto, tanto amata dai gentlemen inglesi e indossata per assorbire l’odore dei loro sigari.

Il Duca di Windsor era dotato di un’eleganza quotidiana che si traduceva nello sfoggio di completi nel noto tessuto in lana quadrettato Principe di Galles, introdotto dal nonno Edoardo VII, come lui leader di stile. Tra una battuta di caccia e l’altra indossava abiti sportivi in tweed scozzese e nelle occasioni più informali prediligeva pullover Fair Isle dalle fantasie inconsuete e berretti morbidi in tessuto, abolendo l’austera redingote di Corte.

Una finestra su uno stile unico. Il virtuoso Duca di Windsor sapeva sempre cosa indossare, con impeccabile abilità negli abbinamenti audaci, ma di estrema raffinatezza. Era in grado di indossare con nonchalance pantaloni nelle tonalità pastello, scarpe scamosciate marroni con abiti blu marino e calzini a righe abbinati a scarpe bicolore.

Una storia di nobile eleganza, il cui stile rispecchiava a pieno la vita del grande Duca mirata all’abolizione delle conformità e dell’obbligo del dovere. Ricca di viaggi, feste, rappresentanze e sport estremi, tra cui la guida di aeroplani, che affrontava con grande coraggio. Fu  un “Principe romantico” che rinunciò al trono inglese per amore dell’americana pluridivorziata Wallis Simpson, ma non rinunciò mai a quello di grande uomo di stile. Un faro di eleganza e gusto per l’uomo moderno.

Ha avuto più influenza di chiunque altro al mondo sulle origini delle tendenze attuali.

Undisputed Arbiter Elegantiae, Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, went down in history as one of the most elegant men of the 20th century. A noble soul and a sweet life devoted to elegance made ​​him one of England’s most famous dandy, just like the Beau Brummell. He was one of the great pioneers of British Style, stretched between traditionalism and glitter which broke the rules imposed by the rigid English society elite.

He had extraordinary tailoring skills and good taste, the Prince of Wales undertook stylistic choices that imposed the canons of men’s fashion: from the famous knot of tie, to the tuxedo jacket, to the pants with amplest leg than the classical ones to pipe, to the soft shirt’s collar in alternative of the starched ones, and cuffs. A teacher of elegance, that would have influenced the menswear of his time, of the years to come and that today constitutes still a point of reference.

His sporting suits and those of the most formal occasions were manufactured by the skilled tailors of Savile Row, famous district in London, where the Duke was fixed customer. He loved the jackets of Huntsman and Scholte, particularly the grey double breasted suit, with four buttons, combined with ample pants in American style and bowler hat. A typical suit of his numerous trips and that then became it the “uniform” of magnates in the twentieth century. He improved the proportions of all his suits, his jacket waists were set high to stretch his silhouette  and he perfected the London Cut, a particular cut of jacket  and with ampler shoulder. From smoke lover, he did cut his pocket wider on the left side of the trousers to accommodate his cigarette case.

From the thirties, Edward has attended to the informal dinners with a dinner jacket Midnight blue, in a blackish blue tonality, that gave a reflex under the artificial light “more black than the black”. This suit was accompanied by tuxedo shirt with turndown collar, double cuffs with cufflinks and pleated bib, a particular alternative to the rigid shirt of frac. Trendsetter ably planned for improving the comfort and strengthen the elegance of his formal suits. The lapel was the peaked lapel, derived from the original “smoking  jacket”, very loved by the English gentlemen and worn for absorbing the smell of their cigars.

The Duke was endowed with a daily elegance that was translated in a show of checkered suits in the known woolen fabric Prince of Wales, introduced by his grandfather Edward VII, as him leader of style. Between a wisecrack of hunting and the other one, he wore sporting suits in Scottish tweed and in the most informal occasions he had a preference for Fair Isle sweater in unusual fantasies and soft fabric hats, abolishing the austere redingote of Court.

A spotlight on a unique style. The virtuous Duke of Windsor has always knew how to dress with impeccable ability in the audacious combinations, but extremely refined. He was able to wear, with easiness, pants in the crayon tonalities, brown suede shoes with blue suits and striped socks combined to bicolored shoes.

A history of noble elegance, whose style has mirrored the life of the great Duke, aimed at abolition of conformities and of obligation of duty. It was rich of trips, parties, representations and extreme sports, among which the guide of airplane, that he faced with great courage. He was a “Romantic Prince” that abdicated the English throne for love of the divorced American Wallis Simpson, but he never gave up to that of great man of style. A landmark of elegance and taste for modern man.

He had maybe more influence than whoever other to the world on the origins of actual tendencies.
