Simbolo indiscusso del power dressing e della vita d’affari, l’abito gessato è un classico senza tempo che regna indisturbato nel guardaroba dell’uomo elegante da quando, durante il XIX secolo, si insinuò tra le file di una classe borghese in continua ascesa.
Divenuto lo status symbol dei banchieri della Londra di fine Ottocento, fu a cavallo tra le due guerre mondiali che il gessato fiorì maggiormente, soprattutto grazie alle grandi icone di stile che gli resero omaggio indossandolo con eleganza suprema: attori famosi come Clark Gable, Cary Grant e Humphrey Bogart; politici e reali del calibro di Winston Churchill e il Duca di Windsor, Edoardo VIII; musicisti e gangster americani come Al Capone che fecero del gessato la propria divisa, abbinandolo a scarpe bicolore e immancabile cappello Fedora.
Di fatto non si è mai assistito ad un oblio del gessato e negli anni ’80 ci fu una marcata riscoperta di questa tessuto, soprattutto da parte dei broker di Wall Street che calcavano la scena finanziaria indossando gessati doppiopetto e cravatte vistose alla Gordon Gekko.
Grazie alla sua straordinaria capacità di conferire autorevolezza a chi lo indossa, oggi il gessato è ancora tra le scelte predilette dell’uomo elegante, il quale vede in questo tessuto un valido alleato con cui fare affari nelle giungle d’asfalto delle metropoli contemporanee.
Il gessato: chalk stripe o pin stripe?
Dal punto di vista tecnico il gessato è un tessuto realizzato, comunemente, in flanella cardata o pettinata e composto da righe che percorrono l’abito in senso verticale, a contrasto rispetto al colore di fondo. La verticalità delle linee contribuisce ad allungare la figura, esaltando ogni fisicità. Le righe possono essere di diverso spessore – in genere si tratta di pochi millimetri – e avere diversa spaziatura.
Le principali tipologie di gessato sono il pin stripe e il chalk stripe. La prima tipologia, il pin stripe, la si riconosce per il fatto che le sue righe sono composte dall’unione di tanti piccoli puntini, i quali ricordano la punta di uno spillo. Il pin stripe definisce una linea piuttosto netta e definita, soprattutto nelle flanelle di lana pettinata di medio peso. ll chalk stripe, invece, come suggerisce il nome stesso, ricorda le linee tracciate dal sarto con il suo gesso. Il chalk stripe forma una linea meno definita rispetto al pin stripe, soprattutto nei tessuti cardati di un certo spessore, da indossare soprattutto nella stagione più rigida.
Esiste anche il cosiddetto rope stripe, la cui riga è formata da piccoli trattini disposti in senso diagonale, che nell’insieme ricordano una corda; quest’ultimo è da molti considerato una tipologia di gessato a sé stante, da altri semplicemente un chalk stripe. In verità, il repertorio dei gessati è molto più vasto; vi sono, infatti, tutta una serie di gessati fancy, i quali sono decisamente più rari e ricercati rispetto alle tipologie chalk stripe e pin stripe.
Il gessato: come indossarlo
Il gessato è un tessuto di per sé formale e ideale per l’ambito lavorativo. È particolarmente adatto all’abito monopetto, anche in versione tre pezzi con gilet, ed è uno dei tessuti che meglio si presta al doppiopetto; l’importante è che il gessato non sia mai spezzato o indossato senza cravatta e il motivo è una ripetizione di quanto detto sopra: l’indole formale di questo tessuto. Inoltre, sempre in virtù del suo spirito lavorativo, il gessato è un abito tipicamente da giorno.
L’abito gessato, quindi, rifugge da tutto ciò che appartiene alla sfera informale e sportiva dell’abbigliamento maschile, sia per quanto riguarda gli accessori che i cromatismi. I colori con cui il gessato tipicamente si presenta sono quelli tipici del registro formale, quindi il blu nelle sue tonalità più scure e il grigio in tutte le sue sfumature.
In termini di stile di taglio, il gessato si sposa alla perfezione con i geometrismi tipici della sartoria inglese e milanese, che meglio esaltano la serietà della vita professionale. In particolare, la spalla cucita aperta, anziché a camicia come si suole vedere in molti abiti gessati, sarebbe da preferire in quanto più adatta al registro formale.
Inoltre, bisogna prestare particolare attenzione nel combinare il gessato con camicie e cravatte a righe, per non rischiare di avere una sovrabbondanza di righe poco armoniose nel loro insieme. Qualora si optasse per una camicia e una cravatta a righe da abbinare al gessato, bisognerebbe avere l’accortezza di scegliere motivi a righe le cui dimensioni e spaziature siano il più possibili diverse tra loro.
Per quanto riguarda le scarpe, meglio optare per un modello Oxford in colore nero o per una scarpa scamosciata nel colore testa di moro. L’importante, come sempre, è avere la giusta dose di buon gusto e di buon senso nel compiere le proprie scelte in fatto di stile, soprattutto quando si tratta di rendere omaggio a un grande classico dell’abbigliamento maschile, quale il gessato.

Undisputed symbol of power dressing and business life, the striped suit, or pinstripe (sensu lato, because, as you will see, in truth the pinstripe is a type of striped fabric), is a timeless classic that rules undisturbed in the elegant man’s wardrobe since, during the nineteenth century, it crept into the ranks of an ever-growing middle class.
Having become the status symbol of London bankers in the late nineteenth century, it was between the two world wars that the pinstripe prospered the most, mainly thanks to the great style icons that paid homage to it by wearing it with supreme elegance: famous actors such as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, and Humphrey Bogart; politicians and royalty such as Winston Churchill and the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII; American musicians and gangsters like Al Capone who made the pinstripe their own uniform, combining it with two-tone shoes and the inevitable Fedora hat.
Actually, there has never been oblivion of the pinstripe. In the 1980s, there was a pronounced rediscovery of this fabric, especially by Wall Street brokers who rode the financial scene wearing double-breasted pinstripes and flashy ties like Gordon Gekko. Thanks to its extraordinary ability to give authority to the wearer, today, the pinstripe is still among the favorite choices of the elegant man, who sees in this fabric a solid ally with which to do business in the asphalt jungles of contemporary metropolises.
The Striped Suit: Chalk Stripe or Pinstripe?
From a technical point of view, pinstripe is a fabric commonly made of worsted or woolen flannel, with stripes that run along with the suit vertically and whose color contrasting to the background hue. The verticality of the lines helps to elongate the figure, enhancing every physicality. Stripes can be of different thickness – usually a few millimeters – and have different spacing to each other: the most common striped suiting fabrics are pinstripe and chalk stripe.
Pinstripe sensu stricto is recognizable by its stripes composed of many tiny dots, which resemble the pin’s tip. Pinstripe is characterized by defined lines, especially in medium weight worsted wool flannels.
On the other hand, the chalk stripe has less defined lines than the pinstripe, especially in thick woolen fabrics for colder seasons. As the name suggests, the chalk stripe resembles the lines drawn by the tailor with his chalk.
There is also the so-called rope stripe, whose lines are formed by tiny dashes arranged diagonally, which as a whole resemble a rope; the latter is considered by many to be a type of pinstripe in its own right, by others simply a chalk stripe. In truth, the pinstripe list is much broader; there are, in fact, a whole series of fancy pinstripes, which are much rarer and more sought after than the chalk stripe and pinstripe types.
The Striped Suit: how to wear it
Pinstripe is a fabric that is formal in itself and ideal for the workplace. It is mainly suitable for single-breasted suits, even in the three-piece version with a waistcoat, and is one of the best fabrics for double-breasted. The pinstripe should never be broken or worn without a tie, and the reason is a repetition of the above: the formal nature of this fabric. Moreover, because of its working spirit, the pinstripe is a typical day dress.
The pinstripe suit, therefore, shuns everything that belongs to the informal and sporting sphere of men’s clothing, both in terms of accessories and colors. The colors with which the pinstripe commonly appears are those typical of the formal register: blue in its darkest shades and gray in all its hues.
In terms of cutting style, the English and Milanese tailorings’ geometrics best enhance the seriousness of the pinstripe. In particular, the open sewn shoulder, rather than the ‘spalla a camicia‘ (shirt-like shoulder), as usually seen in many pinstripe suits, would be preferred as it is more suited to formal wear.
Also, particular attention must be paid to combining pinstripe with striped shirts and ties, as you may risk having an overabundance of less harmonious stripes as a whole. If you opt for a striped shirt and tie to match the pinstripe, you should have the foresight to choose striped patterns whose dimensions and spacing are as different as possible.
As for the shoes, it is better to opt for an Oxford model in black or for a suede shoe in the dark brown color. The important thing, as always, is to have the right amount of good taste and good sense in making your choices in terms of style, especially when it comes to paying homage to a great classic of men’s clothing, such as the pinstripe.
