Provate ad immaginare un orologio elegante, sexy ed adatto ad ogni occasione. Rolex lo ha fatto nel 1956, presentandolo alla fiera di Basilea.
Sto parlando del Rolex Day-Date con referenza 6511.
Fu una novità assoluta ed entusiasmante, il primo orologio al mondo a presentare un calendario completo con giorno della settimana espresso in lettere, riportato in una finestrella nella parte superiore del quadrante oltre al giorno del mese indicato nella classica “fessura” presente ad ore 3.
Il calendario e le sue lingue.
Alla presentazione di lancio, il disco del giorno era disponibile in pochissime lingue. In un catalogo Rolex del 1963 si legge che il calendario esisteva in 11 lingue, in un opuscolo Rolex del 1979 in 24, mentre nel 1985 in 25 differenti lingue.
Oggi Rolex presenta il calendario in ben 26 lingue diverse. Non solo, monta anche un bracciale creato ad hoc a tre file, con chiusura invisibile, chiamato President, perché uno dei primi modelli venne donato in regalo al Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, Dwight D. Eisenhower (notizia mai confermata dalla Casa Bianca).
L’orologio dei Presidenti.
Da John Fitzerald Kennedy – leggenda narra che sul fondello ci fosse inciso: ”Jack, con amore come sempre. Marilyn” – fino ad arrivare a Donald Trump, sono stati molti i Presidenti degli Stati Uniti al cui polso è stato visto il Rolex Day-Date.
Essendo un cronografo certificato COSC, impermeabile, preciso ed affidabile assurse fin da subito ad uno status di orologio d’élite. Il Rolex Day-Date divenne infatti l’orologio maggiormente apprezzato dai potenti della Terra e venne definito, in seguito, l’orologio dei Presidenti.
Referenze e caratteristiche.
La prima referenza, la 6511, uscì con movimento 1055 e con una carrure abbastanza massiccia per poter ospitare congiuntamente il disco data e quello del giorno della settimana. Questa referenza era contraddistinta dalla lunetta zigrinata mentre la 6510 da quella liscia. Per i più attenti questa referenza ricorda un po’ il Bubbleback.
Appena dodici mesi dopo il lancio, Rolex introduce una nuova referenza la 6611: la sostanziale differenza non è nell’estetica ma nel miglioramento del bilanciere per dissipare meno energia durante il funzionamento dell’orologio in modo tale da garantire accuratezza di orario e cambio di giorno/data.
Contemporaneamente a questa referenza vennero introdotte la 6612 con lunetta zigrinata e la 6613, ovvero con dial di brillanti.
Il Day-Date 6611 fu il primo Rolex a fregiarsi dell’ormai leggendaria dicitura: “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified”.
Rolex Day-Date, la referenza più quotata.
Queste referenze rimasero in catalogo fino al 1959, anno in cui entrò sul mercato la referenza considerata da tutti i collezionisti il must-have per tale modello, ovvero la 1803 spinta dal calibro 1555 e successivamente dal 1965, dal calibro 1556. Questa referenza rimase in produzione fino al 1977.
Anno di svolta il 1977, segnò infatti l’ingresso del nuovo calibro perfezionato e migliorato 3055 oltre che le referenze a 5 cifre. Anno che vide anche l’introduzione di un nuovo modello ovvero il Rolex Day-Date OysterQuartz mosso da un meccanismo elettro-meccanico 5055.
L’ultimo grande cambiamento è datato 1988, quando vide la luce il calibro 3155 caratterizzato dal doppio scatto rapido che permette di regolare indipendentemente data e giorno, semplicemente agendo sui vari scatti della corona di carica.

L’attuale modello è il Day-Date 40 odierno, sintesi degli sviluppi storici del marchio.
Il Rolex Day-Date 40, si contraddistingue innanzitutto per una misura più grande rispetto allo standard di 36mm, per la dimensione della sua cassa e dal suo movimento meccanico dal calibro 3255.
Inoltre il Day-Date 40 dispone di un cronometro superlativo, ancora più efficiente del Cronometro con certificazione COSC.
Il cuore del Rolex Day-Date 40 è in Parachrom , per garantire la massima precisione dell’orologio e non subisce l’influenza dei campi magnetici.

Rolex did it too in 1956, launching during the Basel fair the Day-Date reference 6511.
It was an absolute and exciting novelty, the first watch in the world to present a complete calendar with the day of the week expressed in letters, shown in a window in the upper part of the dial in addition to the day of the month indicated in the classic “slit” at 3 o’clock.
The calendar and its languages.
At the presentation the disc of the days was available in very few languages. In a 1963 Rolex catalog we read that the calendar existed in 11 languages, in a 1979 Rolex brochure in 24, while in 1985 in 25 different languages.
Today, Rolex presents the calendar in 26 different languages. When the DD came out, due to the fact that it was a COSC certified, waterproof, precise and reliable chronograph, it immediately assumed the status of an elite watch. In fact, it became the watch most appreciated by the powerful of the Earth. Called the Presidents watch.
References and characteristics.
The first reference, the 6511, came out with a 1055 movement and with a case case massive enough to be able to house both the date disc and the day of the week disc. This reference was distinguished by a fluted bezel while the 6510 by a smooth one. For the more attentive, this reference is somewhat reminiscent of the Bubbleback.
Just 12 months after the launch Rolex introduces a new reference the 6611, the substantial difference is not in the aesthetics but in the improvement of the balance to dissipate less energy during the functioning of the watch in order to guarantee accuracy of time and day/date change. At the same time as this reference, the 6612 with fluted bezel and the 6613, i.e. with diamond dial, were introduced.
The Day-Date 6611 was the first Rolex to bear the now legendary “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” label.
Rolex Day-Date, the most quoted reference.
These references remained in the catalog until 1959, the year in which the reference considered by all collectors as the must-have for this model entered the market, namely the 1803 powered by the 1555 caliber and subsequently from 1965 by the 1556 caliber. This reference remained in production until 1977.
1977 was a turning point, in fact it marked the introduction of the new, perfected and improved caliber 3055 as well as the 5-digit references. A year that also saw the introduction of a new model, the Rolex Day-Date OysterQuartz powered by an electro-mechanical 5055 mechanism.
The last big change dates back to 1988, when the 3155 caliber was born, characterized by the double quick release that allows you to independently adjust the date and day, simply by acting on the various clicks of the winding crown.

Today we have the Day-Date 40, a synthesis of the brand’s historical developments.
Rolex Day-Date 40 is distinguished above all by a larger size than the standard 36mm due to the size of its case and by its mechanical movement with caliber 3255.
