Si è conclusa sabato 17 giugno l’edizione 2023 della 1000 Miglia, la famosissima rievocazione di regolarità della “Freccia Rossa”, una delle più famose gare di velocità del secolo scorso.
Partenza da Brescia e tappa intermedia a Roma, su un percorso che sorprende ancora per bellezza ed eleganza, e quest’anno anche per un format inedito.
Le novità della gara
“La corsa più bella del mondo”, come la soprannominò il Drake Enzo Ferrari, ha mantenuto la sua struttura originale, con partenza da Brescia in direzione Roma, e ritorno alla “Leonessa” qualche giorno dopo, ma nel 2023 ha presentato alcune importanti novità.
La principale è sicuramente la dura prova a cui si sono sottoposti gli equipaggi, un giorno in più di gara che porta a cinque totali le giornate di questa esperienza memorabile. Altro importantissimo tratto distintivo dell’edizione 2023 è il passaggio, dopo l’ultima volta nel 1948, in Piemonte: i piloti hanno infatti attraversato le province di Alessandria, Asti, Vercelli e Novara, e raggiunto il suggestivo arrivo a Milano, in Piazza Duomo per i controlli a timbro e nel moderno quartiere City Life per il controllo orario.
Che tra i doni con cui vengono “coccolati” gli equipaggi ogni anno ci sia stato un cronografo Chopard, non è una novità: la casa Svizzera è sponsor della 1000 Miglia dal 1988. La vera novità risiede nello specifico Classic Chronograph di quest’anno, realizzato con il Lucent Steel™, una lega esclusiva Chopard realizzata per l’80% da materiali riciclati, che garantisce una durezza maggiore del 50%, perfetta per l’utilizzo in una gara così estenuante come la 1000 Miglia.
Il percorso
Come anticipato le tappe della 1000 Miglia 2023 hanno fatto salire a cinque i giorni di gara. Si è
partiti con le consuete verifiche tecniche domenica 11 e lunedì 12 giugno presso il Brixia Forum di
Brescia, seguite dalla cerimonia della punzonatura in Piazza della Vittoria.
La partenza è avvenuta come sempre da Viale Venezia il 13 giugno, dando il via alla prima tappa che ha attraversato Verona e la zona del Lago di Garda, per poi passare da Ferrara e raggiungere l’arrivo a Cervia e Milano Marittima.
La seconda tappa di mercoledì 14 giugno ha percorso la costa adriatica delle Marche, attraversando gli splendidi borghi dell’ascolano, con uno stop a Macerata e l’arrivo nella magnifica Via Veneto, sulla passerella di Roma.
Giovedì 15 giugno le auto sono partite dalla Capitale alla volta di Parma, passando dai laghi di Bracciano, Vico e Bolsena, percorrendo le deliziose colline toscane, cimentandosi nelle prove sul Passo dell’Abetone e guidando sull’iconico tracciato di Formula 1 di Imola.
La penultima tappa del 16 giugno ha rappresentato l’inedito attraversamento del Piemonte, tra i suggestivi panorami delle Langhe ed un emozionante passaggio a Novara, per poi concludersi in grande stile con un tramonto memorabile dietro il Duomo di Milano.
La storia di Bergamo Alta e l’innovazione tecnologica italiana del “Kilometro Rosso” sono stati sicuramente i protagonisti della quinta ed ultima tappa, che ha preceduto l’arrivo di Viale Venezia a Brescia del 17 giugno: prima di raggiungere la passerella, piloti e navigatori hanno attraversato luoghi iconici della Lombardia come il Lago d’Iseo.
Un’edizione 2023 ricca di sensazioni umane, come gli sguardi esterrefatti dei partecipanti dinanzi alla bellezza dei paesaggi attraversati, il sorriso e l’entusiasmo del pubblico in ogni strada e piazza italiana, l’odore di olio, freni e frizioni, i rumori piacevolmente martellanti di questi motori d’altri tempi, ed orgogliosamente assordanti delle Frecce Tricolore, che hanno sorvolato Brescia per la partenza.
Un’edizione caratterizzata da un sole caldo e dalle lamiere bollenti delle vetture, salvo un refrigerio dato da brevi tratti di pioggia nella prima metà di gara. Tutte caratteristiche che hanno ancora una volta reso la 1000 Miglia eroica, degna della letteratura epica, con le auto come elementi di una tela rinascimentale nelle campagne della Val d’Orcia, nelle piazzette marchigiane o tra i monumenti ed i palazzi romani, illuminati tenuemente nella notte da fari gialli che somigliano più ad antiche lampade.
Le protagoniste
Anche per l’edizione 2023 gli iscritti sono stati numerosissimi, con un elenco partenti arrivato a quota 414 equipaggi. Driver e navigatori da ogni parte d’Italia, ma soprattutto del mondo: dalle Fiandre al Giappone, dalla Grecia all’Australia, passando per Stati Uniti e Sud America.
Equipaggi appassionati, agguerriti o anche solo curiosi di scoprire buona parte del nostro Stivale a bordo
delle loro auto, tutte rigorosamente prodotte tra il 1927 ed il 1957 in modelli ed esemplari che hanno preso parte alla 1000 Miglia di velocità.
Sofisticate Alfa Romeo e Siata, le sportive Bugatti, Jaguar e Bentley, e mostri sacri del nostro paese come Cisitalia, Ferrari ed O.M.; immancabili i grandi classici della 1000 Miglia come le numerose Mercedes 300 SL “Ali di Gabbiano” e le Porsche 356 in tutte le versioni, ma anche esemplari più rari ed originali di vari brand, carrozzati da Touring Superleggera, Vignale e Pininfarina.
Grande favorito per occupare il posto più alto del podio è stato l’equipaggio Vesco – Salvinelli su Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Zagato del 1929, seguito al secondo posto dall’equipaggio Fontanella – Covelli su Lancia Lambda Casaro VII Serie del 1927, e dal terzo posto per l’equipaggio Belometti – Bergomi su Lancia Lambda Spider Tipo 221 Casaro del 1929.
1000 Miglia 2023: the most beautiful race in the world in a new format
The 2023 edition of the 1000 Miglia, the very famous regularity re-enactment of the “Red Arrow”, one of the most famous speed races of the last century, ended on Saturday 17 June.
Departure from Brescia and intermediate stop in Rome, on a route that still surprises for its beauty and elegance, and this year also for a new format.
News of the competition
“The most beautiful race in the world”, as the Drake Enzo Ferrari called it, has maintained its original structure, departing from Brescia towards Rome, and returning to the “Lioness” a few days later, but in 2023 it presented some important innovations.
The main one is certainly the tough test that the crews underwent, one more day of competition which brings the days of this memorable experience to a total of five. Another very important distinctive feature of the 2023 edition is the passage, after the last time in 1948, in Piedmont region: the pilots have in fact crossed the provinces of Alessandria, Asti, Vercelli and Novara, and reached the evocative arrival in Milan, in Piazza Duomo for stamp checks and in the modern City Life district for time checks.
That among the gifts with which the crews are “pampered” every year there has been a Chopard
chronograph is nothing new: the Swiss company has been a sponsor of the 1000 Miglia since 1988. The real novelty lies in this year’s specific Classic Chronograph, made with Lucent Steel™, an exclusive Chopard alloy made from 80% recycled materials, which guarantees 50% greater hardness, perfect for use in a race as grueling as the 1000 Miglia.
The route
As anticipated, the stages of the 1000 Miglia 2023 have increased the number of days of competition to five. It started with the usual technical checks on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 June at the Brixia Forum in Brescia, followed by the punching ceremony in Piazza della Vittoria.
As always, the departure took place from Viale Venezia on 13 June, kicking off the first stage which passed through Verona and the area of Lake Garda, to then pass through Ferrara and reach the finish in Cervia and Milano Marittima.
The second stage on Wednesday 14 June traveled along the Adriatic coast of the Marche region, crossing the splendid villages of the Ascoli area, with a stop in Macerata and the arrival in the magnificent Via Veneto, on the catwalk of Rome.
On Thursday 15 June the cars left the Capital for Parma, passing by the lakes of Bracciano, Vico and Bolsena, traveling through the delightful Tuscan hills, engaging in tests on the Abetone Pass and driving on the iconic Formula 1 track of Imola.
The penultimate stage of 16 June represented the unprecedented crossing of Piedmont, between the evocative panoramas of the Langhe and an exciting passage to Novara, to then conclude in great style with a memorable sunset behind the Milan Duomo Cathedral.
The history of Bergamo Alta and the Italian technological innovation of the “Kilometro Rosso” were certainly the protagonists of the fifth and final stage, which preceded the arrival in Viale Venezia in Brescia on 17 June: before reaching the catwalk, pilots and navigators have crossed iconic places in Lombardy such as Lake Iseo.
A 2023 edition full of human sensations, such as the amazed looks of the participants in front of the beauty of the landscapes crossed, the smile and enthusiasm of the public in every Italian street and square, the smell of oil, brakes and clutches, the pleasantly pounding of these old engines, and the proudly deafening ones of the Frecce Tricolore, which flew over Brescia for the departure.
An edition characterized by a hot sun and the hotter metal of the cars, except for a refreshment given by brief stretches of rain in the first half of the race. All characteristics that have once again made the 1000 Miglia heroic, worthy of epic literature, with cars as elements of a Renaissance canvas in the countryside of the Val d’Orcia, in the small squares of the Marche region or among the Roman monuments and
palaces, softly lit in the night by yellow lights that looked more like ancient lamps.
The protagonists
Also for the 2023 edition there were very many entries, with a starting list reaching 414 crews. Drivers and navigators from all over Italy, but above all from all over the world: from Flanders to Japan, from Greece to Australia, passing through the United States and South America.
Enthusiastic crews, aggressive or even just curious to discover a good part of our “Boot” on board their cars, all rigorously produced between 1927 and 1957 in models and specimens that took part in the original 1000 Miglia speed race. Sophisticated Alfa Romeos and Siatas, the sporty Bugattis, Jaguars and Bentleys, and sacred monsters of our country such as Cisitalias, Ferraris and O.M.s; the great classics of the 1000 Miglia were not to be missed, such as the numerous Mercedes 300 SL “Gullwing” and the Porsche 356 in all versions, but also rarer and more original specimens of various brands, with bodyworks by Touring Superleggera, Vignale and Pininfarina.
Vesco – Salvinelli crew on a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Zagato was the great favorite to occupy the top spot on the podium, followed in second place by the Fontanella – Covelli crew on a 1927 Lancia Lambda Casaro VII Series, and third place for the Belometti – Bergomi crew on a 1929 Lancia Lambda Spider Tipo 221 Casaro.
