La camicia button-down, così come i chukka boots, la tasca del bracconiere ed altri elementi del guardaroba maschile, è nata da un’esigenza pratica legata all’attività sportiva.

La storia di questo particolare must-have dell’abbigliamento maschile inizia alla fine del XIX secolo, quando un americano di nome John E Brooks visitò l’Inghilterra e, mentre guardava una partita di polo, notò che i colletti dei giocatori – decisamente voluminosi, come dettato dalla moda dell’epoca e dalle regole del gioco – erano fissate alle loro magliette per evitare che svolazzassero durante l’incontro e che quindi ostacolassero la loro vista.

Impressionato dall’elegante arco indotto dai bottoni, portò l’idea all’azienda di suo nonno e nel 1896 Brooks Brothers (il più antico brand di vestiti da uomo in America) introdusse la camicia button-down nel mondo dell’abbigliamento maschile. Ancora oggi le camicie di Brooks Brothers portano l’orgogliosa dicitura “The Original Polo Shirt”.

Anche i giocatori di tennis propensero subito per lo stesso vantaggio stilistico di cui avevano goduto i giocatori di polo del secolo precedente.

In gran parte grazie alla perspicacia del produttore ucraino di genitori immigrati Bernard Gantmacher, fornitore di camicie del negozio del campus di Yale negli anni ’50 (nonché fondatore del marchio Gant), gli Ivy Leaguers seguirono a ruota, così come la più ampia corrente della costa orientale incarnata da John F. Kennedy.

I culti giovanili britannici che andavano dai Mod (che spesso hanno optato per camicie dal colletto piccolo con un bottone sul retro ) ai rock-rave di Madchester passando per gli Skinhead e i Two Tones, nel frattempo, l’hanno resa popolare in tutta la zona del The Pond dove Brooks fece la sua ormai attenta e storica osservazione.

Indossata con una cravatta allentata e il primo bottone in alto slacciato, la camicia button-down trasuda un forte odore di nonchalance in pieno stile Rat Pack mentre Chet Baker era solito indossare una camicia button-down in Oxford con maniche corte e cravatte strette raggiungendo risultati sorprendenti ed inaspettati.

Ma è un uomo italiano con una reputazione potentissima nel mondo che ha fatto sì che la camicia button-down divenisse davvero popolare: secondo Darren Tiernan, Senior Cutter di Budd Shirtmakers – che definisce la camicia button-down come “il capo chiave del guardaroba maschile classico, con colletto casual” – “Gianni Agnelli indossava la camicia button-down con il suo solito aplomb, rigorosamente con abiti e cravatte e senza abbottonare i colletti. Ha sempre saputo come creare il look perfetto.”.

Croce e delizia all’interno dell’armadio dell’uomo elegante, la camicia button-down, però, ci fa notare che il colletto della camicia – detaglio erroneamente trascurato – ha sviluppato nel corso del tempo diverse sfaccettature (alla francese, all’italiana, con linguette a punta, versione club, chiuso da una spilla, per citarne alcuni), più di quanti ne abbia subito quasi ogni altra parte di indumento ma, forse paradossalmente, quando la forma deriva da una funzione specifica richiesta in un determinato periodo, i risultati tendono ad essere senza tempo.

History of the button-down shirt

The button-down shirt, as well as the chukka boots, the poacher’s pocket and other elements of the male wardrobe, was born from a practical need linked to sporting activity.

The history of this particular menswear must-have begins in the late 19th century, when an American named John E Brooks visited England and, while watching a polo match, noticed that the players’ collars – quite bulky, as dictated by the fashion of the time and the rules of the game – they were fastened to their shirts to prevent them from fluttering during the match and therefore obstructing their view.

Impressed by the elegant arc induced by the buttons, he brought the idea to his grandfather’s company and in 1896 Brooks Brothers (the oldest menswear brand in America) introduced the button-down shirt to the menswear world. Even today, Brooks Brothers shirts carry the proud wording “The Original Polo Shirt”.

Tennis players also immediately leaned for the same stylistic advantage that polo players of the previous century had enjoyed.

Largely thanks to the insight of Ukrainian manufacturer of immigrant parents Bernard Gantmacher, a shirt supplier to the 1950s Yale campus store (and founder of Gant brand), the Ivy Leaguers followed suit, as did the broader current of the east coast embodied by John F. Kennedy.

British youth cults ranging from Mods (who often opted for small collared shirts with a button on the back) to Madchester rock raves via Skinhead and Two Tones, meanwhile, have made her popular throughout the area of The Pond where Brooks made his now shrewd and historical observation.

Worn with a loose tie and the top button unbuttoned, the button-down shirt exudes a strong smell of nonchalance in full Rat Pack style while Chet Baker used to wear an Oxford button-down shirt with short sleeves and tight ties achieving results surprising and unexpected.

But it is an Italian man with a very powerful reputation in the world who has made the button-down shirt really popular: according to Darren Tiernan, Senior Cutter at Budd Shirtmakers – who defines on The Rake the button-down shirt as “the key piece of the male wardrobe. classic, with casual collar” – “Gianni Agnelli wore the button-down shirt with his usual aplomb, strictly with suits and ties and without buttoning up the collars. He always knew how to create the perfect look.”.

Cross and delight inside the elegant man’s wardrobe, the button-down shirt, however, makes us notice that the shirt collar – mistakenly neglected detail – has developed over time different styles (French, Italian, with pointed tabs, club, pin, to name a few), more than almost any other piece of clothing has undergone but, we all know, when the style derives from a specific function required in a given period, the results are timeless.
