Le Mani di Napoli ci porta ad incontrare Cristina Dalcuore che, assieme a Damiano Annunziato, ha ereditato l’onore e l’onere di portare avanti una delle sartorie più popolari nel panorama bespoke internazionale.
La Sartoria Dalcuore, nata a metà degli anni ’60, risulta anomala tra le sartorie napoletane dato che il suo fondatore – Gigi Dalcuore – ha sempre guardato oltre i confini della sua città, ma che, al tempo stesso, ha voluto a tutti i costi mantenere intatto quell’estro creativo tipico dei partenopei.

Eleganza del Gusto: Cristina, ci vuol spiegare perché il caro Gigi veniva definito il “sarto non sarto”?
Cristina Dalcuore: Lei deve sapere che mio padre ha fin da piccolo manifestato una forte vena artistica, ma è diventato sarto tardi, rispetto alla media dell’epoca. A sedici anni, ad esempio, è andato via di casa in giro per l’Europa ed ha fatto perfino il ceramista. Era tormentato perché non riusciva a trovare la sua dimensione artistica e, non appartenendo ad una famiglia di sarti, nessuno l’ha spinto verso l’ago ed il filo.
EdG: Ed è bastato questo per ricevere l’appellativo?
CD: No, quando si avvicinò al mondo della sartoria (presso Sartoria Del Duca, ndr) capì fin da subito che quello sarebbe stato il suo mestiere per la vita. Al tempo stesso, però, si sentiva vincolato dalle regole sartoriali e manifestava la voglia di lasciare un segno tutto suo, qualcosa che rompesse gli schemi. Quando iniziò a dimostrare di poterlo fare, gli altri sarti iniziarono ad aggettivarlo in quel modo, sottolineando il suo non essere capace di rispettare le regole e quindi di non essere un vero sarto. Quella che è nata come un’etichetta negativa, negli anni è diventata il suo punto di forza.
EdG: Qual è lo stile Dalcuore?
CD: La Sartoria Dalcuore evita gli eccessi. La nostra giacca è leggerissima e armoniosa nei volumi, viene realizzata con l’unico obiettivo di mettere in risalto la figura del cliente. Oggi il mercato ti invita a proporre qualcosa di diverso, quando ha iniziato a farlo mio padre la condizione era totalmente opposta.
EdG: Lei è entrata subito in sartoria?
CD: Papà mi ha fatto studiare. Sono un architetto e condivido da sempre con lui un certo gusto estetico, però lo studio mi ha portato ad acquisire un metodo. Quando sono entrata in sartoria ho dovuto letteralmente rubare con gli occhi la tecnica di mio padre che non mi spiegava nulla del suo estro creativo e che pretendeva da me l’attenzione nel capire cosa stesse succedendo durante le varie fasi di lavorazione. Devo ammettere che inizialmente ero titubante sull’efficacia del suo metodo, ma ora che non c’è più sto avendo le risposte che ho sempre voluto. Non potrò mai ringraziarlo abbastanza e sto cercando di fare lo stesso percorso con i nostri ragazzi.
EdG: A proposito di ragazzi, vorrei sentire un parere dal vostro pupillo, Luigi Beatrice.
Luigi Beatrice: Tutto ciò che posso dire è che, a 27 anni, mi sento ricco. Ho avuto l’onore di poter affiancare il Signor Luigi ed essere accanto a Cristina, oggi. Sono in Sartoria Dalcuore da quando ero ragazzino e voglio dare il mio contributo per rendere ancora più grande questa eccellenza napoletana.
EdG: Cristina, cosa avrebbe detto Gigi su Le Mani di Napoli?
CD: Posso solo dirle che, con l’ingresso ne Le Mani di Napoli, sono certa di aver realizzato un suo desiderio. Negli anni la sartoria napoletana è arrivata in tutto il mondo, ma mio padre lamentava sempre il non riuscire ad essere in grado di far appartenere la sartoria napoletana a Napoli. Credo fermamente che noi siamo sulla strada giusta.

Le Mani di Napoli leads us to meet Cristina Dalcuore who, together with Damiano Annunziato, has inherited the honor and the burden of carrying on one of the most popular tailors in the international bespoke scene.
Sartoria Dalcuore, born in the mid-60s, is anomalous among Neapolitan tailors given that its founder – Gigi Dalcuore – has always looked beyond the borders of his city, but who, at the same time, wanted at all costs keep intact that creative flair typical of the Neapolitans.

Eleganza del Gusto: Cristina, can you explain to us why Gigi was called the “non-tailor tailor”?
Cristina Dalcuore: You must know that my father showed a strong artistic vein from an early age, but he became a tailor late, compared to the average of the time. At sixteen, for example, he left home around Europe and even worked as a ceramist. He was tormented because he could not find his artistic dimension and, not belonging to a family of tailors, no one pushed him towards the needle and thread.
EdG: And was this enough to receive the appellation?
CD: No, when he approached the world of tailoring (at Sartoria Del Duca, ed) he immediately understood that this would be his job for life. At the same time, however, he felt constrained by sartorial rules and manifested the desire to leave a sign of him all about him, something that would break his mold. When he began to demonstrate that he could do it, the other tailors began to label him that way, emphasizing his not being able to respect the rules and therefore not being a real tailor. What began as a negative label has become his strong point over the years.
EdG: What is the Dalcuore style?
CD: Sartoria Dalcuore avoids excesses. Our jacket is very light and harmonious in volumes, it is made with the sole aim of highlighting the customer’s figure. Today the market invites you to offer something different, when my father started doing it the condition was totally opposite.
EdG: Did you immediately enter the workshop?
CD: Dad made me study. I’m an architect and I’ve always shared a certain aesthetic taste with him, but studying has led me to acquire a method. When I entered the tailoring shop, I literally had to steal my father’s technique with my eyes, who didn’t explain anything to me about his creative flair and who demanded my attention in understanding what was happening during the various processing stages. I have to admit that initially I was hesitant about the effectiveness of his method, but now that he’s gone I’m getting the answers I’ve always wanted. I can never thank him enough and I’m trying to go the same route with our younger tailors..
EdG: Speaking of young tailors, I would like to hear an opinion from your protégé, Luigi Beatrice.
Luigi Beatrice: All I can say is, at 27, I feel rich. I had the honor of being able to support Mr. Luigi Dalcuore and be next to Cristina today. I have been in Sartoria Dalcuore since I was a kid and I want to give my contribution to make this Neapolitan excellence even greater.
EdG: Cristina, what would Gigi have said about Le Mani di Napoli?
CD: I can only tell you that, with my entry into Le Mani in Naples, I am sure I have fulfilled one of your wishes. Over the years, Neapolitan tailoring has reached all over the world, but my father always complained about not being able to make Neapolitan tailoring belong to Naples. I firmly believe that we are on the right track.
